Unfortunately, parents and teachers often overlook the early signs of autism in a child, believing that it is just a case of slower development. Autism does not affect all children the same way, but children with the disorder generally show developmental shortcomings with repetitive behaviors and inadequate skills in communication (verbal and/or nonverbal) and social interactions. Children with autism may have extreme difficulty with social interactions but at the same time possess only minor communication impairments. Parents and teachers must remember that the disorders represent a range of behaviors from mild to severe. The earlier that a doctor diagnoses autism the quicker the child can receive treatment that can enable developmental progress.

Autism spectrum disorders hinder normal developmental patterns. Some children may show signs of future problems from the time of birth while others may develop at an expected rate. Symptoms usually become apparent between one and three years of age. At this time, children may begin to react to objects or people in unexpected ways or show other unusual behavior. Some parents say that they noticed a marked and sudden change in behaviors while others say that their children seemed to reach a developmental plateau, continuously falling further behind peers. Parents may want to speak to a pediatrician if their children fail to communicate through babbling or gestures by their first birthday, do not respond to their names, seem to lose language skills, and do not show signs of language acquisition by the age of two. Other possible signs of autism include not smiling, a lack of attention, attachment to a single object or toy, failure to make eye contact, and abnormal interactions with toys.

Problems that may accompany autism spectrum disorders include mental retardation, seizures, sensory problems, and tuberous sclerosis, a rare genetic disorder. Parents should consult with professionals as soon as concern mounts, so that they may secure the help the children need.

Dr Max Bulmash

After graduating from Yeshiva University in New York City with a Bachelor of Arts, Dr. Max Bulmash attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.
